TRUMP APPROVES FIRING SQUAD EXECUTION OF US ARMY BASE SHOOTER
Pentagon confirms presidential green light for the capital punishment of former Major Nidal Malik Hasan, marking a historic move in US military justice
United States President Donald Trump has approved the execution by firing squad of former US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted for the 2009 mass shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas.
The decision was announced by Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, who stated that the execution recommendation was formally advanced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth before receiving final presidential approval.
Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was convicted by a military jury in 2013 on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder following the November 5, 2009, attack that left 13 people dead and over 30 others wounded.
According to military prosecutors, the attack was inspired by extremist ideology and opposition to US military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. During his 2013 court-martial, Hasan chose to represent himself, offering no defense or testimony.
The Secretary of the Army is authorized to determine the specific time and venue for the sentence to be carried out.
Legal experts note that if the penalty proceeds as scheduled, it will represent the first military execution in the United States since 1961, when Private John Bennett was executed by hanging.
