Tragic Crash in Ilorin: Truck Kills Pedestrian, Wrecks Vehicles After Brake Failure

A tragic accident occurred Friday morning in Ilorin, Kwara State, when a Mitsubishi Canter truck reportedly suffered brake failure and crashed at the Offa Garage Roundabout, killing a pedestrian and damaging several vehicles.

The incident, which happened around 8:00 a.m. along the Ilorin–Ajase Ipo highway, involved a truck carrying gallons of palm oil. Witnesses say the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and rammed into the AP Filling Station near the busy roundabout.

The impact was devastating—one of the fuel pumps was uprooted, another was severely damaged, and five vehicles were wrecked in the crash. Two men sustained injuries, while the truck driver, identified as Nasiru, escaped unhurt.

Emergency response teams from the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA) arrived at the scene. KWARTMA confirmed that the deceased had been evacuated and the injured victims taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

KWARTMA’s spokesperson, Gani Olawoye, confirmed the truck’s brake failure as the cause and emphasized the need for proper vehicle maintenance, especially for commercial drivers.

He added that KWARTMA’s Acting General Manager, Engr Michael Bamidele, had ordered increased monitoring of high-risk areas and called on motorists to prioritize safety checks.

In a move to reduce pedestrian risk in the area, authorities have also ordered all beggars around the Offa Garage axis to vacate the location immediately.

The tragic event has once again highlighted the dangers of poorly maintained vehicles and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
