A tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when a two-storey building collapsed at No. 54, Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, near UBA Bank in Oyingbo, Lagos. The collapse, which happened shortly after midnight, has left many residents trapped beneath the debris while others were pulled out alive by emergency responders.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), a distress call was received at around 12:20 a.m. Firefighters from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station arrived at the scene within minutes to begin rescue operations.

Margaret Adeseye, Director of the LSFRS, confirmed that 15 people have been rescued so far — seven men, four women, and four children. All the victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and were immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, and the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, for urgent treatment.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the building had earlier been marked as unsafe but was still occupied by residents at the time of the collapse.

As of this morning, rescue efforts remain in full swing. Emergency officials continue to search through the rubble to ensure no one is left behind. Adeseye assured Lagosians that the LSFRS, alongside other emergency agencies, remains fully mobilised at the site to guarantee that every trapped individual is safely recovered.

Residents have been urged to stay clear of the area to allow rescue teams unhindered access as the operation continues.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
