TOP 10 AFRICAN CURRENCIES WITH THE HIGHEST VALUE IN AUGUST 2026

North African currencies continue to dominate the ranking of Africa’s strongest currencies in August 2026, with the Tunisian dinar maintaining the top position against the US dollar.

The latest ranking highlights the currencies with the highest nominal value on the continent, based on the number of units required to exchange for one US dollar. Tunisia, Libya and Morocco occupy the first three positions.

The Tunisian dinar ranks first, with about 2.96 dinars exchanging for one US dollar. Its position reflects the relatively high nominal value of the currency compared with most other African currencies.

Libya’s dinar follows in second place at approximately 6.41 dinars to the dollar, while Morocco’s dirham ranks third at about 9.38 dirhams per US dollar.

Ghana’s cedi occupies the fourth position, trading at around 11.64 cedis to one US dollar. The currency is the highest-ranked West African currency on the August list.

The Seychellois rupee comes fifth at approximately 13.52 to the dollar, followed closely by Botswana’s pula, which stands at about 13.77 per US dollar.

Eritrea’s nakfa ranks seventh at 15.00 to the dollar, while South Africa’s rand takes the eighth position at about 16.74 per US dollar.

Eswatini’s lilangeni and Namibia’s dollar complete the top 10, with both currencies trading at approximately 16.80 units to one US dollar.

Nigeria’s naira does not appear among the 10 currencies with the highest nominal value in the August ranking. However, the naira recorded some gains during the first half of 2026, supported by foreign exchange reforms and improved dollar liquidity.

The ranking also demonstrates that a currency’s nominal exchange-rate value does not necessarily mean that its economy is the largest or strongest on the continent. Factors such as monetary policy, inflation, foreign exchange availability, economic stability and market conditions also influence how currencies perform.

The latest figures therefore provide a snapshot of Africa’s currency landscape in August 2026, with North African economies continuing to dominate the continent’s highest-valued currencies.
