The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the arrest of a Togolese driver whose reckless driving caused a serious accident at the Adeniji Adele intersection, inward Ilubirin, Lagos Island.

According to a statement issued on Monday by Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, the crash occurred when the driver of a Mazda car (registration number EPE 749 GS) was travelling at an unlawful speed.

The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a pedestrian attempting to cross the road. The victim sustained severe injuries and heavy bleeding.

Eyewitnesses said the motorist attempted to flee the scene but was intercepted by LASTMA officers, who later handed him over to the Adeniji Adele Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) rushed the injured pedestrian to the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island, where the victim is receiving urgent medical treatment.

Condemning the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described speeding as one of the major causes of avoidable road crashes in Lagos.

“Motorists must exercise restraint and comply strictly with traffic regulations to safeguard lives and property,” Bakare-Oki warned.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
