Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, has added another medal to her collection after clinching silver in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, September 15.

Amusan, the 2022 world champion and current world record holder, finished in 12.29 seconds, narrowly missing out on gold to Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji. The 23-year-old Swiss athlete stunned the field with a record-breaking 12.24 seconds, securing her country’s first-ever world title in the event.

American hurdler Grace Stark took bronze with a time of 12.34 seconds, while her teammate Masai Russell placed fourth in 12.44 seconds after a slow start.

Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska matched her season’s best of 12.49 seconds for fifth, just ahead of Bahamian star Devynne Charlton, who ran the same time. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams, the defending champion, came in seventh (12.53), while the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser rounded out the final in eighth (12.56).

Amusan, 28, entered the final as one of the favourites after cruising through her semi-final in 12.36 seconds. She started strongly in the final but was edged out by Kambundji’s late surge.

With this silver, Amusan secures Nigeria’s 12th medal in World Championships history, further cementing her place among the world’s elite hurdlers. It also adds to her legacy following her unforgettable 2022 victory in Eugene, where she set the still-standing world record of 12.12 seconds.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
