TOBI AMUSAN SHINES AGAIN, WINS FIFTH 100M HURDLES TITLE AT 2025 AFN TRIALS
Sprint queen and world record holder Tobi Amusan has once again proven she’s the woman to beat, claiming her fifth national title in the 100m hurdles at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials.
The event, held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos, saw Amusan dominate her race from start to finish, crossing the line in an impressive 12.57 seconds. With this victory, the 28-year-old strengthens her form and confidence ahead of the World Athletics Championships scheduled for September in Tokyo, Japan.
In other highlights from the trials:
Men’s 400m: Gafar Badmus clinched first place with a time of 45.71 seconds, beating Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29s) and David Akhalu (46.91s).
Women’s 400m: In a surprising twist, veteran Patience Okon-George was disqualified, clearing the way for African U-20 champion Favour Onyah to take gold in 52.69 seconds. Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna followed closely.
Women’s 100m: Rising star Chioma Nweke, also an African U-20 champion, stormed to her first national senior title with a winning time of 11.27 seconds. She edged out defending champion Olayinka Olajide (11.39s) and Iyanuoluwa Bada (11.45s).
The AFN Trials not only showcased Nigeria’s athletic talent but also served as a major selection ground for athletes heading to the global stage. For Amusan and others, the road to Tokyo is now in full gear.
