TIWA SAVAGE: “IT’S UNFAIR TO TALK ABOUT AFROBEATS BIG 3 WITHOUT TEMS”
Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has weighed in on the ongoing debate about Afrobeats’ so-called “Big 3,” saying it is unfair to exclude female artists—especially Grammy-winning singer Tems—from the conversation.
The term “Big 3” is widely used to describe male Afrobeats giants Davido, Burna Boy, and Wizkid. But speaking in a recent interview with BBC Radio 1Xtra, Tiwa argued that the label sidelines the achievements of women who have made remarkable contributions to the genre.
“Think about it,” she said. “Certain types of artistes get paid more, so they can spend more on influencers and radio play. You’re going to hear their music way more.
“But I feel like it’s unfair to have a conversation about the Top 3 and not mention someone like Tems. Are you serious?”
Tems shot to international fame in 2020 with her feature on Wizkid’s global hit “Essence.” She has since become a powerhouse in her own right, winning her first Grammy in 2023 for her contribution to “Wait For U” with Future and Drake, and securing her second Grammy in 2025 in the Best African Performance category.
Tiwa’s comments have sparked discussions online, with many fans agreeing that the Afrobeats narrative should expand beyond male dominance to acknowledge the incredible impact of women like Tems—and Tiwa herself—who have helped take the genre to the global stage.
