TIWA SAVAGE EXPLAINS WHY SHE REJECTS ‘QUEEN OF AFROBEATS’ TITLE
Award-winning Nigerian singer, Tiwa Savage, has said she is not entirely comfortable with being called the “Queen of Afrobeats.”
Speaking in a recent interview with Apple Music’s Ebro, the singer explained that while she appreciates the love from fans, she doesn’t accept the title because it places too much responsibility on her and overlooks the contributions of other female artists.
“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” she said.
Tiwa noted that the tag feels uncomfortable because accepting it might make her appear arrogant, and she believes it doesn’t fully capture the diversity of women shaping Afrobeats today.
“Personally, I don’t like that tag. It’s uncomfortable because if I start accepting it, I need to be humble and secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t [accept it]. But I appreciate it. I didn’t come up with it. I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artists in Nigeria to breakthrough. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted,” she added.
Despite her humility, Tiwa Savage remains one of the most influential figures in Afrobeats, with her groundbreaking success paving the way for many female artists in Nigeria and beyond.
