President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed relevant government agencies to investigate the operations of major technology companies, including Meta, Google, and various AI platforms, operating in Nigeria.

The directive, according to sources, is aimed at ensuring compliance with local laws, data protection regulations, and fair competition practices. It also seeks to address concerns over content moderation, data privacy, and the potential impact of artificial intelligence on the Nigerian economy and society.

Presidential spokesperson, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, confirmed that the probe would be thorough and transparent, with the goal of creating a more regulated and beneficial digital environment. “We welcome technology but it must operate within the confines of our laws and serve the best interests of Nigerians,” he said.

The move has sparked discussions among tech stakeholders, some of whom see it as necessary oversight while others express concerns about potential over-regulation.

The investigation is expected to examine issues ranging from tax obligations to the ethical use of AI tools in the country.
