President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to accelerate the enrolment of all eligible Nigerians into the national identity database, setting a 2026 deadline for the exercise.

The directive is aimed at expanding the country’s identity management system, improving access to government services, and strengthening national planning through comprehensive population data.

According to the presidency, the enrolment drive is expected to enhance service delivery, promote financial inclusion, improve security, and support the implementation of government programmes across the country.

The President urged NIMC to work closely with relevant ministries, agencies, state governments, and private sector partners to ensure the successful registration of citizens and legal residents.

He also emphasised the importance of deploying digital technology and expanding registration centres to make the enrolment process more accessible, especially in rural and underserved communities.

Government officials noted that a comprehensive national identity database is essential for effective policy implementation, social intervention programmes, tax administration, and national security.

NIMC reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the enrolment process by improving infrastructure, increasing public awareness, and enhancing operational efficiency nationwide.

Stakeholders have welcomed the initiative while calling for adequate funding, reliable digital infrastructure, and simplified registration procedures to achieve the target within the stipulated timeframe.

Analysts believe the successful completion of the nationwide enrolment exercise could significantly improve governance, economic planning, and the delivery of public services.

The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to building an inclusive and reliable national identity system that supports sustainable development and benefits all Nigerians.
