TINUBU HAILS AFCFTA’S ENDORSEMENT OF CUSTOMS MODERNISATION

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed the African Continental Free Trade Area’s endorsement of Nigeria’s efforts to modernise its customs administration.

The President said the recognition reflected Nigeria’s commitment to improving trade facilitation, strengthening border management, and making cross-border commerce easier for businesses.

The customs modernisation programme is aimed at using technology to simplify import and export procedures, improve transparency, and reduce delays at Nigeria’s borders.

Tinubu said an efficient customs system would be important to achieving the objectives of AfCFTA by supporting smoother movement of goods and strengthening trade among African countries.

He noted that reducing administrative bottlenecks could lower the cost of doing business and encourage more Nigerian companies to participate in regional and international trade.

Trade experts said modern customs systems could also improve revenue collection by reducing leakages and strengthening the monitoring of transactions.

They urged the government to ensure that the modernisation programme is implemented consistently across ports and border posts.

Stakeholders also called for stronger collaboration between Customs and other agencies responsible for trade, security, and border management to avoid duplication and delays.

Tinubu said Nigeria would continue to support initiatives that promote regional integration and increase the country’s participation in intra-African trade.

The President urged relevant agencies to build on the progress recorded and ensure that customs reforms deliver measurable improvements for importers, exporters, and other businesses.

He said modernising Nigeria’s customs system would strengthen the country’s competitiveness and support the broader goal of creating a more integrated African market.
