TINUBU CELEBRATES FAYOSE AT 65, RECALLS CHALLENGES OF HIS FIRST TERM
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reflected on the political turbulence that marked Ayodele Fayose’s first term as governor of Ekiti State, highlighting how the misuse of presidential power significantly contributed to the crisis that ended his administration prematurely.
Tinubu made the remarks in a congratulatory message honoring Fayose, who turns 65 on November 15. He praised the former governor’s resilience in the face of political storms that overshadowed the final months of his initial tenure.
“Although his first term as Governor of Ekiti was marked by considerable upheaval and was cut short due to the abuse of presidential powers, his courage remained unwavering,” Tinubu said.
“He faced the ordeal with remarkable strength and managed adversity with admirable composure.”
Fayose was removed from office in 2006 after then-President Olusegun Obasanjo declared a state of emergency in Ekiti State, an episode Tinubu referenced in his tribute.
Despite that setback, Tinubu noted that Fayose achieved one of the most remarkable political comebacks in Nigeria’s democratic history.
“He made a historic return in 2014, becoming the first politician to defeat two sitting governors in separate elections,” Tinubu added.
Describing Fayose, popularly known as Osokomole, as a fearless political figure, the President commended his clarity of conviction.
“Osokomole is a man of firm beliefs. His consistency, whether in agreement or disagreement, defines his strength as a national leader. He speaks his mind without fear or favour,” Tinubu said.
The President also highlighted Fayose’s strong connection with the grassroots, noting that his nickname Ore Mekunnu—friend of the poor—aptly reflects his political style and public appeal.
“He is at home among ordinary citizens, especially the vulnerable. He understands retail politics and has built deep, personal ties with the people,” Tinubu added.
On Fayose’s developmental achievements, Tinubu noted: “During his tenure, he delivered significant projects across key sectors. He improved road networks, expanded access to healthcare and education, and oversaw major projects including the State High Court Complex and a new Governor’s Office.”
Tinubu concluded with prayers and appreciation for Fayose’s support:
“As his elder brother, I value his support for me and my administration. On the occasion of his 65th birthday, I pray that God grants Peter Ayodele Fayose good health and renewed purpose in service to humanity. Happy birthday, Osokomole!”
