President Bola Tinubu and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar have exchanged criticism over responsibility for Nigeria’s hunger and poverty following the launch of the APC’s 2027 presidential campaign in Kaduna.

Speaking at Ranchers Bees Stadium on Saturday, Tinubu said his administration was tackling hardship inherited from political opponents who previously held power.

He promised to pursue economic recovery, growth and opportunities, presenting his re-election bid as a chance to build greater prosperity.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima also defended Tinubu’s political relationship with the North, saying the President had supported prominent northern politicians during difficult periods.

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani challenged opposition figures campaigning on northern identity to demonstrate their records of service.

Responding, Atiku, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, rejected Tinubu’s explanation. He accused the President of shifting blame rather than accepting responsibility for hardship under his administration.

The ADC Presidential Campaign Council separately criticised the rally, alleging that it featured hired crowds, empty seats and repeated promises. Those claims were not independently established in the account provided.

The Makinde-Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation also questioned the administration’s record, accusing it of falling short on security, economic welfare and political inclusion in the North.

The exchanges highlight competing arguments over the causes of hardship and the government’s performance as campaigning intensifies ahead of the 2027 election.
