Tinubu Backs 2025 Nuga Games, Promises Boost For Youth And Sports
President Bola Tinubu has pledged full support for the upcoming Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) 2025, setting the stage for what organisers say could be the most impactful edition yet.
Speaking during a strategic roadmap session and Eid El Kabir celebration at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, Khalifah Onu, Group Chairman of Royal CBS, confirmed the president’s backing. The games are set to take place from November 6 to 16, 2025, at the University of Jos.
🏆 A Bigger, Bolder NUGA Experience
According to Onu, NUGA 2025 is being organised in collaboration with key national institutions, including the National Sports Commission, Ministry of Youth Development, Nigeria Police Force, and FRSC.
He praised President Tinubu’s commitment to youth empowerment, saying the administration’s support is giving the event renewed energy and purpose.
“We’re not just planning a sports event — we’re creating a lasting impact. NUGA 2025 will help young athletes go from campus champions to international stars,” Onu said.
🤝 Beyond Sports: Promoting Peace, Creating Jobs
One of the major goals of NUGA 2025, Onu noted, is nation-building — using sports to unite divided communities, empower young people, and drive grassroots development.
He acknowledged that NUGA had slipped off the national radar in recent years but assured stakeholders of a revival with a fresh strategy and purpose-driven approach.
“We’re using NUGA as a platform to empower students, create jobs, and distribute wealth,” he added, urging all participating universities to approach the tournament with passion and discipline.
🏟️ Jos Ready to Host
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya (represented by Mr. Abaji Adankala), expressed satisfaction with the preparations so far.
“We’re about 90% ready. The planning team is doing a great job, and we’re confident that Jos will deliver a memorable NUGA Games,” he said.
🌍 Talent Discovery & Global Opportunities
Ataboh Shehu, Group Director-General of Royal CBS, emphasized the bigger vision: building a pipeline for young athletes similar to successful models in the West.
“It’s time to discover Nigeria’s future sports stars and help them build real careers — through scholarships, support, and international exposure.”
With strong backing from the presidency, clear goals, and renewed energy, NUGA 2025 could mark a turning point for youth sports in Nigeria — not just for medals, but for unity, empowerment, and lasting change.
