TikTok deleted more than 3.6 million videos from Nigerian users between January and March 2025 for violating its Community Guidelines — a 50% rise compared to the previous quarter.

This data was revealed in the platform’s Q1 2025 Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, underscoring TikTok’s commitment to fostering a safe, respectful, and trustworthy online space.

According to the report released on Tuesday, 98.4% of the flagged content was identified proactively, meaning it was taken down before being reported by users. Additionally, 92.1% of the violating videos were removed within 24 hours of upload.

TikTok emphasized that these removals accounted for only a small portion of the total content shared by Nigerian users during the quarter, noting that the majority remained positive, educational, and entertaining.

In regional enforcement actions, TikTok also removed 129 West African accounts in March 2025 for involvement in covert activities.

The platform also intensified monitoring of LIVE broadcasts to ensure policy compliance. In Nigeria alone, TikTok banned 42,196 LIVE rooms and interrupted 48,156 livestreams in the first quarter of 2025 for violations.

“Enforcing our guidelines on LIVE content continues to be a top priority as we work to protect the integrity of real-time engagement on the platform,” the report stated.

Globally, TikTok removed over 211 million videos in Q1 2025 — a significant increase from 153 million in the previous quarter. Of these, 184 million were taken down using automated systems, with a proactive detection rate of 99%.

Despite the scale of these removals, the platform noted that harmful content still represented less than 1% of total uploads, reflecting its ongoing focus on user safety and well-being.

In June, TikTok Africa hosted the ‘My Kind of TikTok Digital Well-being Summit,’ bringing together experts, NGOs, creators, media, and industry stakeholders from across Sub-Saharan Africa to explore strategies for enhancing digital wellness.

As part of new initiatives, TikTok expanded its in-app helpline to Nigeria through a partnership with Cece Yara, a child-focused NGO supporting youth safety. The helpline will offer expert guidance to young users facing issues such as suicide, self-harm, hate, and harassment.

TikTok also appointed Dr. Olawale Ogunlana, known as Doctor Wales, as its Digital Well-being Ambassador for Nigeria. He joins the WHO Fides Network, which comprises healthcare professionals focused on promoting online wellness.

Through continued campaigns like #SaferTogether, TikTok is encouraging users to report harmful content and help build a respectful, secure digital community.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
