TikTok has agreed to pay Alabama at least $100 million and introduce additional safety measures for teenage users as part of a settlement that avoids a trial over allegations concerning child safety on the platform.

The settlement, reached with Alabama on Friday, requires TikTok to introduce several restrictions for teens in the state. These include a two-hour daily usage limit, restricted access between midnight and 6am, and the suspension of notifications during school hours. 

The company will also strengthen age-verification measures, prevent teenagers from using beauty filters and provide an option for a non-personalised content feed.

Alabama had sued TikTok in 2025, alleging that the platform's design could negatively affect young users and that the company had misrepresented the effectiveness of some safety features. TikTok denied the allegations.

Under the agreement, Alabama will receive an initial $100 million payment, with the amount potentially rising to $300 million if other states enter similar agreements with the company.

The settlement comes amid wider legal action in the United States concerning social media platforms and their impact on young users. TikTok also reached a separate $400 million settlement with the US Justice Department in August over allegations involving children's privacy, without an admission of liability.

TikTok said the agreement builds on its existing efforts to improve safety tools and protections for teenagers.
