Three Nigerians died in separate incidents across South Africa between September 18 and 21, 2026, the Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg has said.

The Consul-General, Amb. Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, disclosed this in a statement condemning the deaths and calling for thorough investigations by South African authorities.

The victims were identified as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadú, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka.

According to the Consulate, the three incidents occurred in Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Ekurhuleni. It said the circumstances surrounding the deaths included allegations of police misconduct, a fatal shooting following an altercation and an incident involving members of a content-creation team.

The Consulate called on South African authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding each death and ensure that anyone found responsible faces the law.

It also stressed that allegations of wrongdoing should be handled through established legal processes and should not be used to justify unlawful action.

The mission expressed concern over the safety of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa and urged Nigerians in the country to remain calm, law-abiding and security-conscious.

Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, also condemned the deaths and said the latest incidents brought the number of Nigerians killed in South Africa in 2026 to 12, although that broader figure is his stated tally.

The Consulate extended condolences to the families of the deceased and said it would continue engaging South African authorities on the matter.
