THOUSANDS WELCOME ALAAFIN HOME FROM BRAZIL

Thousands of residents of Oyo town on Tuesday thronged major roads to give a rousing welcome to the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, following his return from a week-long official visit to Brazil.

The monarch’s homecoming was marked by colourful displays, cultural performances and jubilant celebrations as residents, traditional title holders, community leaders, traders, youth groups and religious leaders gathered from the early hours of the day to receive him.

The crowd assembled at Elekara, on the outskirts of the ancient town, where they waited several hours before escorting the royal convoy into the city amid drumming, dancing and chants in honour of the revered monarch.

Many of the residents described the Alaafin as a visionary and people-oriented traditional ruler whose leadership had continued to foster unity, peace and development across Oyo and its adjoining communities.

Some of those who spoke with journalists said Oba Owoade’s humility, accessibility and commitment to the welfare of his subjects endeared him to the people.

According to them, the monarch exemplifies servant leadership by listening to the concerns of his subjects, urging inclusiveness and inspiring confidence among the people.

One of the residents said Alaafin had demonstrated courage and foresight in the discharge of his responsibilities, adding that his reign was already attracting renewed hope for the ancient kingdom.

“Alaafin is a leader who carries everyone along. He is humble, compassionate and committed to the progress of Oyo. That is why the people have come out in their numbers to welcome him home,” the resident said.

The residents also expressed appreciation for what they described as the monarch’s unwavering commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the Yoruba race while promoting the development of the kingdom.

Oba Owoade’s visit to Brazil formed part of his engagements aimed at strengthening cultural ties between the Yoruba homeland and the diaspora, as well as promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Oyo Kingdom on the global stage.
