Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja was officially installed in 2025 as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, a moment that blends history, tradition, and politics in Nigeria’s largest indigenous city.
Here are key facts about the revered monarch:
1. Former Governor of Oyo State

2. An Elder Statesman Turned Monarch
Born September 25, 1944, the Olubadan ascended the throne at age 81, bringing decades of political, business, and leadership experience into traditional rulership.
3. A Scholar and Polyglot
He studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Liège, Belgium, and is fluent in multiple languages, including French. Ladoja had a successful professional career before venturing into politics.
4. Business Acumen
Beyond politics, he built a reputation as an accomplished businessman, working with Total Nigeria and later venturing into oil, gas, and shipping enterprises.
5. Over 32-Year Journey to the Throne
His path to becoming Olubadan followed the unique Ibadan rotational chieftaincy system. Over three decades, he rose steadily through titles such as Jagun Olubadan, Osi Olubadan, and Otun Olubadan, before finally attaining the throne in 2025.
6. Defender of Ibadan Tradition
In 2017, he opposed the controversial chieftaincy review introduced by then-Governor Abiola Ajimobi, which sought to elevate several Ibadan chiefs to kingship status. Ladoja fought in court and successfully defended the integrity of the traditional succession system.
7. A Calm and Diplomatic Leader
Widely admired for his moderation and bridge-building skills, Oba Ladoja is expected to play a stabilising role not only in Ibadanland but also in Oyo State politics.
8. Successor to Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin
