TENSION IN SENATE AS AKPABIO CLASHES WITH OSHIOMHOLE OVER “UNRULY” CONDUCT

What should have been a routine Senate sitting quickly turned into a tense showdown on Wednesday, as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole locked horns during plenary.

The disruption began when Oshiomhole repeatedly interrupted proceedings, loudly calling for a “Point of Order” while Akpabio was reading the Votes and Proceedings from the previous sitting. What started as an attempt to be heard soon escalated into a full-blown confrontation on the Senate floor.

Akpabio, visibly displeased, did not hold back. He reminded Oshiomhole of the importance of order and discipline within the chamber, stressing that every senator must operate within established rules.

“If you are a senator, you must go by the rules,” he stated firmly before ruling Oshiomhole out of order.

But the warnings didn’t immediately calm the situation. Oshiomhole continued speaking from his seat, insisting on being recognised, further heightening the tension in the chamber.

At that point, other lawmakers stepped in. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu was asked to guide his colleague on Senate procedures, while Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno issued a stern warning about possible disciplinary action if the behaviour continued.

Still, the turning point came when Akpabio escalated his warning, making it clear that stronger action could be taken.

“If you become unruly, I will take you out of the Senate,” he said.

That statement appeared to do the trick. Oshiomhole eventually backed down, allowing the plenary to proceed without further disruption.

However, this clash didn’t happen in isolation. Observers see it as part of an ongoing tension between the two lawmakers. Just a day earlier, they had disagreed sharply over Oshiomhole’s call for Nigeria to take a tougher stance against South Africa following reports of xenophobic attacks.

Beyond the immediate drama, some political watchers believe this face-off may hint at deeper undercurrents—possibly linked to future power dynamics in the Senate, especially as conversations around the 2027 Senate Presidency begin to quietly take shape.

But beyond politics and power, the moment raises a broader question about leadership and decorum in public office. In a space meant for lawmaking and national decision-making, how disagreements are handled can be just as important as the issues being debated.

For now, calm has returned to the chamber—but the tension between these two strong personalities may not be over just yet.
