TENANT DIES IN IBADAN RENT ARGUMENT, LANDLORD AND ASSOCIATE ARRESTED
The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a landlord and his associate following the death of a tenant, identified as Olayeni, in the Oriyangi area of Ibadan, the state capital.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday during an argument over unpaid rent. Reports indicate that Olayeni was struck during the altercation, allegedly by the landlord’s associate, and later died despite efforts by emergency responders.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the development. He explained that Olayeni collapsed after the assault and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Both suspects have been taken into custody, while investigations continue. The police also extended condolences to the bereaved family, assuring that justice would be served.
The case has stirred renewed conversations about the rising cost of rent across Nigeria, with many urging government action to prevent similar landlord-tenant clashes.
This is not the first tragedy of its kind in Ibadan. In 2011, a landlord was arrested for allegedly killing his tenant, Jelili Akande, during a quarrel over a N300 electricity bill.
