Residents and businesses in several parts of Abuja are expected to experience a six-hour electricity interruption on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, as the Transmission Company of Nigeria carries out scheduled preventive maintenance on a major transformer. The exercise is expected to affect electricity supply between 10:00am and 4:00pm while engineers conduct routine checks aimed at maintaining the reliability of the transmission network.

The maintenance will be carried out on a 100MVA power transformer and its associated switchgear at the Central Area GIS 132/33kV Transmission Substation. According to the Transmission Company of Nigeria, its maintenance team will use the period to inspect the equipment and carry out preventive checks as part of efforts to ensure that the transmission infrastructure continues to operate effectively.

The planned work will temporarily affect the ability of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company to supply power to customers connected to the affected transmission facility. Areas listed for the outage include Wuse Zones 1 to 7, the Sheraton Hotel area and the Central Business District, as well as Utako and Jabi. Residents and businesses in surrounding communities are also expected to experience the interruption during the maintenance period.

TCN explained that the scheduled exercise is part of its wider programme of preventive maintenance across the national transmission network. The company said routine checks on major transformers and related equipment are necessary to identify potential faults early and help maintain the stability and reliability of electricity transmission across the country.

The transmission company apologised to electricity consumers in the affected areas for the inconvenience caused by the planned outage. Power supply is expected to resume after the maintenance work is completed, although the actual restoration will depend on the successful completion of the checks and the safe return of the equipment to service.
