TAX OMBUD URGES GOVERNMENT AGENCIES TO STRENGTHEN TAXPAYERS’ CONFIDENCE
The Tax Ombud has called on government institutions to take steps to strengthen taxpayers’ confidence in Nigeria’s tax system.
The office stressed the importance of transparency, accountability and fair treatment in improving the relationship between taxpayers and government agencies responsible for tax administration.
According to the Tax Ombud, taxpayers are more likely to comply with their obligations when they have confidence that their contributions are being properly managed and that their rights are protected.
The office also highlighted the need for government institutions to provide clear information about tax requirements and ensure that taxpayers can easily access relevant services.
Effective communication between tax authorities and taxpayers was identified as another important factor in building trust and improving voluntary compliance.
The Tax Ombud urged government agencies to respond promptly to complaints and disputes while ensuring that taxpayers are treated fairly during the tax administration process.
The call comes as Nigeria continues efforts to expand its tax base and improve domestic revenue collection.
Stakeholders have increasingly emphasised the importance of creating a tax system that encourages compliance while reducing unnecessary difficulties for individuals and businesses.
The Tax Ombud said stronger institutional accountability would help improve taxpayers’ experiences and contribute to greater confidence in the tax system.
It urged government institutions to maintain standards that promote fairness and transparency while working to improve the overall efficiency of tax administration.
