TAX OMBUD PARTNERS NIPOST TO IMPROVE RURAL COMPLAINTS RESOLUTION
Market traders and taxpayers in rural communities could soon find it easier to resolve tax complaints through a proposed partnership between the Office of the Tax Ombud and the Nigerian Postal Service.
The Tax Ombudsman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr John Nwabueze, announced the plan during a stakeholders’ town hall meeting on Friday.
He said arrangements were nearing completion to formalise the collaboration, which would bring complaint-handling services closer to people in underserved communities.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the office explained that the initiative would help taxpayers seek redress over administrative and procedural problems involving tax and revenue authorities.
However, it did not announce a commencement date or explain how taxpayers would submit complaints through NIPOST.
Nwabueze said the partnership formed part of efforts to make tax administration fairer, more transparent and accountable while encouraging people to meet their tax obligations voluntarily.
He described the Tax Ombud as an independent and impartial institution that handles complaints and mediates disputes outside the court system. Its services are free.
According to him, the office considers both taxpayers’ rights and their responsibilities, alongside the obligations of revenue authorities.
He added that a clear and consistent tax system could strengthen trust, support small businesses and improve investor confidence.
