TAX LAWS NOT ALTERED, SIGNED VERSIONS INTACT — AKPABIO

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed claims that Nigeria’s newly implemented tax laws were altered after passage, insisting that the versions signed into law remain authentic and unchanged.

Akpabio clarified plenary on Wednesday, following reports that multiple versions of the tax laws were in circulation. He assured lawmakers and the public that there was no adulteration of the legislation approved by the National Assembly.

“I understand that there is another version circulating which does not comply with what was contained in our votes and proceedings. There is no adulteration,” Akpabio said. “At this stage, you can confidently discard anything that is contrary.”

He explained that four separate tax Acts had been duly passed, signed by the President, gazetted, and certified by the Clerk to the National Assembly to eliminate any confusion.

To further ensure transparency, Akpabio directed the Clerk of the Senate to distribute certified copies of the Acts to all senators, stressing that the documents must not be released to unauthorised persons.

“Every senator is expected to go home with one today. Those who are absent will receive theirs directly. These Acts must only be issued by the Clerk and properly certified to avoid any confusion,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Senate postponed consideration of the report of its Committee on Electoral Matters to allow lawmakers more time to study it. Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, said the delay was partly due to the unavailability of the committee chairman, Senator Simon Lalong.

Akpabio supported the decision, noting that there was no need to rush the process. “We will take our time and do the needful to ensure justice is done for all,” he assured.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
