TAX COMPLIANCE VITAL FOR INFRASTRUCTURE, SOCIAL SERVICES
Nigerian lawyers have stressed the importance of tax compliance, saying improved payment of taxes is essential to strengthening government revenue and funding infrastructure and social services.
The lawyers made the call during a stakeholder engagement focused on taxation and the role of the Tax Ombud in Nigeria’s tax administration system.
They noted that taxes provide an important source of funding for public services, including education, healthcare, roads, security, and other infrastructure.
The stakeholders urged taxpayers to understand their obligations and comply with relevant tax laws, while also calling on tax authorities to ensure that the system remains fair, transparent, and accountable.
They stressed that effective tax administration should encourage voluntary compliance rather than rely solely on enforcement.
The lawyers also highlighted the importance of protecting taxpayers’ rights and providing accessible mechanisms for resolving disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities.
They said greater public awareness of tax obligations and taxpayer rights would help improve trust in the tax system.
The stakeholders maintained that stronger compliance, combined with efficient management of public revenue, could provide governments with more resources to deliver essential services and execute development projects.
They therefore called for continued collaboration among taxpayers, legal practitioners, government agencies, and other stakeholders to build a more effective and transparent tax system in Nigeria.
