A dispatch rider has been killed in a fatal road accident involving a tanker in the Motorways Inward Estate area of Alapere, Lagos State.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.

According to the agency, the accident involved an empty NIPCO tanker with registration number TTN-776ZQ and a moving dispatch rider.

Preliminary findings indicated that the tanker driver was allegedly speeding when he rammed into the dispatch rider, leading to the rider’s instant death.

Taofiq said LASTMA operatives responded quickly to the scene to prevent a breakdown of law and order as angry dispatch riders gathered and attempted to attack the tanker driver.

He added that officials successfully rescued the driver from the mob and handed him over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service for medical attention after he sustained severe injuries.

He said police operatives from the Alausa Division were also deployed to restore calm and disperse the crowd.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased rider and urged motorists to drive responsibly.

He warned against speeding and reckless driving, describing them as major causes of avoidable road crashes in the state.

LASTMA said the tanker and the wreckage of the motorcycle had been handed over to the police, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
