A suspected kidnapper has died following a gun battle with operatives of the Delta State Police Command.

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly sustained fatal gunshot injuries during the confrontation and later died at a hospital where he was taken for treatment. This was confirmed in a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on January 6, 2026, after operatives of the Commissioner of Police Special Assignment Team acted on intelligence reports.

“On January 6, 2026, operatives of the CP Special Assignment Team stormed Ohoror community along the Ughelli–Patani Road, following credible intelligence that suspected kidnappers were operating in the area,” the statement said.

“The suspects opened fire on sighting the police, leading to a gun duel during which one of them was hit and sustained severe gunshot injuries.”

Police recovered one K-2 rifle, two locally made firearms, live ammunition, and cartridges concealed in a bag at the scene.

“The injured suspect was rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,” the statement added.

The police said efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
