SURVEYORS PUSH SECURITY-FIRST BUILDING DESIGNS TO FIGHT CRIME

Surveyors have advocated the integration of security considerations into building and urban designs as a proactive measure to combat rising crime and enhance national security.

Experts at a recent forum stressed the importance of digital mapping and geospatial technologies in supporting crime prevention through environmental design. Proper mapping can provide critical data for law enforcement, reduce land disputes, and improve infrastructure planning.

Ayo Medubi, CEO of Indept Engineering Limited, highlighted how accurate geographic data could prevent incidents like vandalism of power lines and aid in tracking criminals in remote areas. “A digital map provides vital information for tackling crime and building infrastructure,” he said.

The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors and related associations called for greater collaboration between surveyors, government, and security agencies to leverage technology for safer urban environments. They emphasised the role of surveyors in generating real-time data for effective policing and development.

Stakeholders believe adopting security-first approaches in design will contribute significantly to reducing insecurity and fostering sustainable physical and economic development across Nigeria.
