SUPPORT CREATIVE ARTS WITH MORE FUNDING, FUTA PROFESSOR URGES TETFUND
A Professor of Industrial Design at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Professor Kashim Abolaji, has urged the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) to increase financial support for creative arts education across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
Prof. Abolaji made the call during the annual final year art exhibition titled “Creative Flair” at the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, held over the weekend. The exhibition served as a showcase for the graduating students of TASUED’s Creative Arts Department to present their works and demonstrate skills acquired over the years.
While commending TASUED’s commitment to art education, the professor emphasized the importance of practical training in creative disciplines such as painting, sculpture, textile design, graphics, ceramics, and photography. He pointed out that these fields require significant investment in equipment and materials, which many institutions struggle to afford.
“TETFund has done well in supporting infrastructure and teaching tools across Nigerian universities, but we are urging them to also prioritize funding for creative and applied arts. The creative industry is booming in Nigeria, and we must prepare our students with the tools they need to thrive,” he said.
Professor Abolaji praised TASUED’s efforts in providing a supportive environment for creative learning, noting that the high quality of student projects on display reflected a solid foundation in both academics and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Oluwakemi Oriola, the Head of TASUED’s Creative Arts Department, described the grand exhibition as a culmination of the students’ artistic journey, starting from their first year. He added that the event not only tested their skills but also gave them an opportunity to enter the growing creative economy confidently.
He encouraged the students to keep developing their talents and explore the numerous opportunities in Nigeria’s fast-growing art and design space.
Also speaking at the event, TASUED Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwole Sikiru Banjo—represented by the university’s Registrar, Mr. Dapo Oke—applauded the students for their exceptional work and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to expanding its creative arts department. He disclosed that TASUED is partnering with notable art expert, Yemisi Shyllon, to further develop and promote the program.
With continued support from institutions like TETFund and active partnerships, the future of creative arts education in Nigeria looks bright—and ready to make an even bigger impact on the national economy.
