SUPER FALCONS CHASE 10TH WAFCON TITLE IN MOROCCO, SET TO PROVE THEY’RE STILL AFRICA’S BEST

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are back on the hunt for African glory, eyeing a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title as the tournament kicks off this weekend in Morocco.

After the heartbreak of 2022, when they crashed out in the semi-finals and settled for an unusual fourth place, the Falcons are determined to reclaim their crown and remind the continent who rules women’s football in Africa.

Since the tournament began in 1998 (then called the African Women’s Championship), the Super Falcons have lifted the trophy nine times. They were unstoppable in the early years — clinching back-to-back titles in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2006 — and continued to dominate with wins in 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018. Now, they’re chasing their tenth title, fittingly represented by the Roman numeral “X”, to cement their legendary status.

The Falcons head into this year’s WAFCON drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria. They kick off their campaign on Sunday, July 6, against Tunisia in Casablanca, with matches against Botswana and Algeria to follow.

This tournament is also the first major test for head coach Justin Madugu, who stepped up after Randy Waldrum’s exit last year. Madugu knows what’s at stake — not just for his career, but for Nigerian coaches hoping to earn more trust on the big stage.

“We’re not just representing ourselves but every local coach in Nigeria,” Madugu said. “Doing well opens doors for others. Failing makes it harder. We’re focused on what’s ahead.”

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade says the team is fully aware of the pressure but ready to rise to the occasion.

“There’s unity and purpose in the squad. It’s about more than talent; it’s about hunger, consistency, and resilience,” she noted.

Midfielder Deborah Abiodun added that their recent 3–1 win over Ghana in a friendly was the perfect confidence booster.

“Ghana brought the physicality. It was a great test and a step toward our bigger goal,” she said.

Eyes Also on the World Cup

While the mission is clear — bring the trophy home — there’s another prize on the line. This WAFCON doubles as qualifiers for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup. The top four teams will represent Africa on the global stage.

NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi reminded fans of this extra incentive.

“Winning WAFCON almost feels like Nigeria’s birthright. But beyond national pride, there’s a World Cup ticket at stake. By God’s grace, we won’t disappoint Nigerians.”

Legends Weigh In

Former Super Falcons stars like Gloria Ofoegbu and Desire Oparanozie have urged the team to stay grounded, ignore the pressure, and fight for the badge.

“You’re the pride of women’s football in Africa. Maintain the standard. Fight for the badge,” Ofoegbu advised.

The Super Falcons have never failed to bounce back from a slip in two consecutive editions. With the likes of Asisat Oshoala, Ajibade, Abiodun, and Ihezuo all in form, fans are hopeful Nigeria’s queens of football will soar once again.

As Madugu summed it up:

“Our girls are hungry for victory and understand what’s at stake. We’re ready.”

So, will Morocco witness history as Nigeria lifts their 10th WAFCON trophy? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain — the Super Falcons are chasing greatness.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
