SUPER FALCONS CHASE 10TH WAFCON TITLE AGAINST HOST NATION MOROCCO IN EPIC FINAL SHOWDOWN
The Super Falcons of Nigeria are just one game away from making history — again. On Saturday, they face Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), and all eyes are on them as they chase a record-extending 10th continental title.
The Nigerian ladies have been impressive throughout the tournament in Morocco. From a 3-0 opening win over Tunisia to a goalless draw against Algeria, which prompted an apology from coach Justin Madugu, the team has grown stronger with every match. Their response? A dominant 5-0 quarter-final win over Zambia, followed by a hard-fought 2-1 victory against defending champions South Africa in the semis.
Sports journalist Biola Solace-Chukwu, who has been covering the tournament live from Morocco, says the Falcons have improved steadily:
“The Algeria game wasn’t their best, but they showed real quality in the Zambia clash. The semi-final against South Africa was always going to be tough.”
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade has been electric, bagging three consecutive Woman of the Match awards. But according to Solace-Chukwu, it's defender Ashleigh Plumptre who has quietly been the team’s backbone.
“For me, Plumptre has been the standout player in every match,” she said.
As the Falcons gear up for the final, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Morocco, playing at home in front of a passionate crowd at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, will be out for glory too. It was the Atlas Lionesses who knocked Nigeria out in the 2022 semi-finals, so there’s a strong sense of unfinished business.
“It’s going to be a battle,” Solace-Chukwu warns.
“The home crowd will be loud, just like in 2022. But this is the Super Falcons we’re talking about. They know how to handle pressure.”
Victory on Saturday won’t just mean lifting the trophy — it would send a powerful message that Nigeria remains the queen of African women’s football. It’s also a chance for the younger players in the squad to gain vital experience and for the team to reclaim its fearsome reputation across the continent.
With passion, pride, and history on the line, the Super Falcons will need to bring their A-game. Can they silence the Moroccan crowd and seal a historic 10th title? All roads lead to Rabat.
