SUPER EAGLES FACE EARLY TEST AS NIGERIA BEGINS ROAD TO AFCON 2027

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are set to begin their quest for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with renewed pressure to deliver a stronger campaign after a difficult period for the national team.

The Nigerian side has been drawn in Group L alongside Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau, with the opening qualifying fixtures scheduled for September. The campaign presents an opportunity for the Super Eagles to rebuild confidence and restore optimism among supporters following recent disappointments.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains one of the biggest setbacks surrounding the team. The Super Eagles endured a difficult qualifying campaign before progressing to the African play-off stage, where their hopes of reaching the expanded World Cup were finally ended by the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The decisive play-off encounter finished 1-1 after extra time before the Democratic Republic of Congo prevailed on penalties in November 2025. The result meant Nigeria would miss the World Cup for a second successive edition, having also failed to secure qualification for the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

Despite that disappointment, the Super Eagles showed signs of their competitive strength at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Nigeria reached the semi-finals before losing to the hosts on penalties and subsequently claimed third place after defeating Egypt in another penalty shootout.

That performance demonstrated that Nigeria remains capable of competing with some of Africa’s strongest teams, but it also highlighted the need for greater consistency if the country is to convert promising tournament performances into major silverware and regular qualification for global competitions.

The AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign therefore arrives as an important opportunity for the team to turn the page. With the disappointment of the World Cup qualification failure still fresh, the players and coaching staff will be under pressure to make a positive start and avoid another campaign dominated by uncertainty.

Nigeria’s group contains familiar opponents, with Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau both having previously caused problems for the Super Eagles. Madagascar famously defeated Nigeria 2-0 at the 2019 AFCON, while Guinea-Bissau have also taken points from Nigeria in previous qualifying encounters.

Tanzania, meanwhile, are co-hosts of the 2027 tournament alongside Kenya and Uganda and have already secured automatic qualification. Nevertheless, Tanzania remain part of Nigeria’s qualifying group, leaving Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau competing for the remaining qualification place available from the group.

The qualification format means there will be little room for complacency. While the Super Eagles are widely regarded as favourites to secure the available spot, their recent history against some of the teams in the group serves as a reminder that reputation alone will not guarantee progress.

For Nigeria, the immediate priority will be to establish momentum from the opening fixtures. Positive results would ease some of the pressure surrounding the team and provide the foundation for a more confident qualification campaign.

The players will also be expected to respond strongly after the disappointment of missing the World Cup. With a number of experienced stars still capable of leading the team, the qualifiers provide an opportunity for the Super Eagles to combine established talent with emerging players and begin building a more reliable squad.

The 2027 AFCON will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, with the tournament expected to bring together 24 of Africa’s leading national teams. Qualification will therefore be particularly important for Nigeria, a three-time African champion with a long-standing reputation as one of the continent’s major football powers.

For the Super Eagles, the objective is straightforward: start strongly, maintain consistency and secure the qualification ticket without allowing the setbacks of the past campaign to affect the new journey.

The road to AFCON 2027 begins with expectations already high, but Nigeria’s players now have the chance to turn pressure into motivation and give supporters a fresh reason to believe in the national team again.
