SUPER EAGLES COACH REFLECTS ON RISKY TACTICS IN 1-1 DRAW WITH BAFANA BAFANA
Nigeria’s Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has identified a tactical mistake made by his side in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa on Tuesday.
The encounter at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein ended 1-1, with South Africa taking the lead in the 22nd minute through William Troost-Ekong’s own goal before Fulham defender Calvin Bassey leveled the score for Nigeria before halftime.
Speaking after the match, Chelle explained that Nigeria’s decision to risk a one-on-one setup at the back during the first half was what led to the early setback.
“For me it was a great game, full of intensity and aggressiveness,” Chelle said. “Both teams tried to play well despite the condition of the pitch. Congratulations to South Africa for their performance, and to Nigeria as well.
“We wanted to take a risk in the first half to stay one-on-one behind because winning was our target. Unfortunately, just 22 minutes in, we conceded a goal. But after that, the players showed great spirit to fight back.”
Following the result, Nigeria now sit in third place in their qualifying group, behind South Africa and Benin Republic.
