SUBSIDISED IMPORTS THREATEN NIGERIA’S AGRICULTURAL GROWTH – FG

The Federal Government has warned that subsidised imports are significantly undermining Nigeria’s agricultural sector and threatening long-term food security goals.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, made the observation on Friday at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja.

He said the influx of cheap, subsidised agricultural products from other countries is making it difficult for local farmers to compete, leading to reduced investment and production in key value chains.

“Subsidised imports distort the market and discourage our hardworking farmers. We must protect local production to achieve sustainable agricultural growth,” Kyari stated.

The government pledged to review trade policies, strengthen border controls, and introduce more robust support mechanisms for Nigerian farmers, including access to credit, modern inputs, and better market linkages.

Farmers’ groups at the event welcomed the position and called for urgent action to safeguard the sector.
