STAKEHOLDERS CALL FOR STRONGER ENFORCEMENT TO CURB GAS FLARING
Industry stakeholders have called for stricter enforcement measures and improved monitoring systems to address the persistent challenge of gas flaring in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
The appeal was made during discussions on environmental sustainability and energy management, where participants stressed the need for stronger regulatory action against non-compliance.
According to stakeholders, despite existing regulations, gas flaring continues to pose environmental, economic, and public health concerns in several oil-producing communities.
They urged authorities to adopt more effective tracking mechanisms, including the use of technology and real-time monitoring tools, to ensure greater accountability among operators.
Experts noted that reducing gas flaring would not only help lower greenhouse gas emissions but also create opportunities for gas utilisation, power generation, and industrial development.
They further emphasized the importance of collaboration between regulators, energy companies, and host communities in achieving long-term progress.
Stakeholders argued that consistent enforcement of penalties and incentives for compliance would encourage investment in cleaner and more sustainable energy practices.
The call comes as Nigeria continues efforts to meet environmental commitments while maximising the economic value of its natural gas resources.
