SPOTIFY INTRODUCES IN-APP MESSAGING TO MAKE MUSIC SHARING MORE SOCIAL
Spotify is stepping up its social game with a brand-new feature that lets users send direct messages within the app. The feature, simply called Messages, allows you to share your favorite songs, podcasts, and audiobooks with friends—without ever leaving Spotify.
Rolling out this week for users aged 16 and above in select markets, Messages is Spotify’s answer to the growing demand for a dedicated space to swap recommendations. Whether it’s that catchy new single, a must-hear podcast, or a binge-worthy audiobook, Spotify wants users to connect over it right inside the app.
Here’s how it works: when you’re listening to something in the “Now Playing” view, just tap the share icon, pick a friend, and hit send. Recipients can react with emojis, reply with text, or decline requests altogether. For privacy, all messages are encrypted, and Spotify’s moderation system will scan for harmful content.
So far, sharing Spotify content has relied on apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, or TikTok. But by bringing messaging in-house, Spotify hopes to boost engagement and make music discovery a more social, interactive experience.
“We’re excited to continue offering more ways to drive hype for the Spotify content you love,” the company said in its announcement.
Users can message people they’ve already connected with on Spotify—through Blends, Collaborative Playlists, Jams, or Family/Duo plans. And if things get spammy, blocking accounts is just a tap away.
With this move, Spotify is blurring the line between streaming and social networking—making your next favorite track easier to share, react to, and talk about in real time.
