Spanish football is mourning the loss of Raul Ramirez Osorio, a 19-year-old goalkeeper who tragically passed away following a head injury sustained during a league match.

The incident occurred on Saturday, September 27, during a Tercera Federation league clash between Colindres and Revilla. Ramirez went into cardiac arrest after colliding with an opposing forward while attempting to catch a cross in the 60th minute.

His manager, Rafa de Pena, rushed onto the pitch and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, with the assistance of a nursing student watching the game. Ramirez was briefly revived before being transported in critical condition to Marques de Valdecilla Hospital in Santander.

Despite intensive care, the young goalkeeper suffered a second cardiac arrest en route to the hospital and, after two days of fighting for his life, he was confirmed dead on Monday, September 29.

In a statement, the Royal Cantabrian Football Federation (RFCF) described the loss as devastating, announcing three days of mourning and a minute’s silence across all fixtures. The Federation also revealed that, in accordance with his family’s wishes, Ramirez’s organs will be donated to help save others.

“Cantabrian football mourns the sudden loss of a young man who leaves us too soon, at just 19 years of age,” the RFCF said. “We send our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Colindres Sports Club. May Raul rest in peace.”

His club, Colindres, had earlier urged fans to keep faith while Ramirez was still fighting for his life, describing him as a source of strength and spirit for the team.

The match was immediately suspended after the incident, leaving teammates and opponents in shock.

Ramirez’s death has sparked widespread grief in Spanish football, with tributes pouring in from players, officials, and fans who described him as a promising young talent taken far too soon.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
