SOWORE: ELECTORAL ACT AMENDMENT BEHIND POOR TURNOUT IN FCT COUNCIL POLLS
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has blamed the low voter turnout in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council elections on the recent signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill by President Bola Tinubu.
Sowore made the remark on Saturday while speaking at Polling Unit 001, LEA Primary School, Kabusa, in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Abuja.
According to the former presidential candidate, many Nigerians have lost confidence in the country’s electoral process, which he believes has contributed to voter apathy.
He argued that the newly amended electoral law weakens transparency, stressing that democracy thrives on trust. Sowore noted that once trust in the system erodes, citizens become reluctant to participate in elections, especially since voting requires personal time, effort, and resources.
The publisher of Sahara Reporters added that public attention is largely fixed on the 2027 general elections rather than the ongoing FCT area council polls.
