SOWORE CALLS FOR SUSPENSION AND SCRAPPING OF NYSC

African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has called for the immediate suspension and eventual scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps scheme following the abduction of prospective corps members in Imo State.

Sowore made the call after 20 prospective corps members travelling from Oyo State to their orientation camps were abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road.

He argued that the security situation surrounding the movement and deployment of young Nigerians under the scheme should be reviewed.

Sowore said the Federal Government should prioritise the safety of young Nigerians rather than continue operating the scheme under what he described as inadequate security conditions.

His comments followed growing concerns over the safety of prospective corps members after the latest abduction.

Security agencies have launched efforts to locate and rescue the victims, with the Inspector-General of Police deploying a senior officer to Imo State to coordinate the operation.

Sowore’s proposal comes amid wider public and political discussions about the future of the NYSC scheme and the safety of participants.
