SOUTH AFRICAN WOMAN SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS FOR BRINGING HEROIN INTO NIGERIA
The Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a 38-year-old South African woman, Jessica Ann, to 25 years in prison for unlawfully importing 5.75 kilogrammes of heroin into Nigeria. Ann was convicted after pleading guilty to the offence, which occurred on July 6, 2026, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency had arraigned Ann before the court in August following her arrest over the importation of the illicit drug. During the proceedings, she admitted to unlawfully bringing the 5.75kg consignment of heroin into the country. Justice Obiora Egwuatu said the defendant had also admitted committing the offence in an extrajudicial statement before her guilty plea in court.
During the sentencing proceedings, Ann was given an opportunity to address the court and pleaded for leniency. She expressed remorse and promised not to engage in such an act again, while also claiming that she did not know there were illicit drugs in the bag. The judge, however, said the law could not be influenced by emotions and stressed that crime does not pay.
Justice Egwuatu subsequently sentenced Ann to 15 years imprisonment on the first count and 25 years on the second count. The court ordered that both sentences should run concurrently, meaning the convict will effectively serve a total of 25 years in prison. The court also ordered that the seized heroin should be destroyed if Ann fails to appeal the judgment within the period prescribed by law.
The conviction adds to the NDLEA’s recent efforts to intercept international drug trafficking operations through Nigeria’s airports and other entry points. Ann’s case began with her arrest over the 5.75kg heroin consignment, and the court’s decision has now formally concluded the prosecution at the Federal High Court in Abuja, subject to any appeal that may be filed within the period allowed by law.
