Norwegian Nobel Committee honors former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and international judge for her lifelong commitment to global justice, institutional accountability, and the rule of law

Distinguished South African jurist and human rights champion, Navanethem "Navi" Pillay, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo.

The committee announced the prestigious accolade in recognition of her profound contributions to international law, her tireless advocacy for human rights, and her instrumental role in ensuring that perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide face prosecution.

Highlighting her extensive judicial career, the panel emphasized that Pillay's principled leadership has served as a vital cornerstone for global peace, particularly at a time when international legal institutions face mounting political pressure and rising global conflicts.

Born in Durban under the apartheid regime, Pillay built a pioneering legal career that began with defending anti-apartheid activists, including Nelson Mandela's associates, before scaling international heights as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Court of Justice.

She subsequently served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, earning global acclaim for her uncompromising stance against systemic discrimination, state-sponsored violence, and impunity.

International leaders, legal scholars, and human rights organizations have flooded global networks with congratulatory messages, celebrating the recognition of an extraordinary jurist whose career bridges the struggle against domestic oppression and the advancement of global accountability.
