SOKOTO, NEMA BEGIN 2026 FLOOD PREPAREDNESS CAMPAIGN
The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has launched a 2026 flood preparedness campaign aimed at reducing the impact of flooding across vulnerable communities.
The initiative is designed to improve awareness, strengthen early warning systems, and encourage residents in flood-prone areas to take preventive measures ahead of the rainy season.
Officials say the campaign will focus on community sensitisation, drainage clearance, relocation advice for high-risk settlements, and emergency response training for local volunteers.
NEMA representatives noted that recent years have seen increasing flood incidents in parts of northern Nigeria, making proactive preparedness essential to saving lives and protecting property.
The Sokoto State Government said it is working with local councils and traditional leaders to ensure that information reaches grassroots communities effectively.
Part of the campaign includes identifying high-risk zones and encouraging residents to avoid building on waterways and flood plains.
Authorities also plan to deploy emergency response teams and pre-position relief materials in strategic locations to ensure quick intervention when needed.
Residents have been urged to cooperate with officials and adhere to safety advisories, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
Disaster management experts say early preparedness is key to reducing the devastating effects of flooding, which has displaced thousands in past seasons.
The campaign is expected to run throughout the year as part of broader efforts to strengthen climate resilience and emergency response capacity in the state.
