SOKOTO GOVERNMENT OPENS TALKS WITH ASUU TO AVERT UNIVERSITY STRIKE

The Sokoto State Government has begun discussions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in an effort to prevent industrial action at state-owned universities. The meeting was convened amid growing concerns over unresolved issues affecting academic staff and the implementation of agreements between the government and the union.

The engagement is aimed at finding common ground on the concerns raised by ASUU and ensuring that academic activities continue without disruption. The development comes as ASUU branches in the Sokoto zone have been pressing authorities to address outstanding matters linked to staff welfare and the implementation of the 2025 agreement.

ASUU has recently intensified pressure on several universities across the country over what it described as delays and inadequate implementation of agreements reached with government. The union’s National Executive Council had authorised affected branches, including those in the Sokoto zone, to begin processes towards industrial action after issuing the required ultimatums.

The Sokoto discussions therefore represent an attempt to resolve the issues through dialogue before they escalate into a strike that could interrupt lectures, examinations and other academic activities. Both sides are expected to examine the outstanding demands and work towards commitments that can address the concerns of lecturers while protecting the academic calendar.

The development will be closely watched by students, parents and university stakeholders, particularly as prolonged industrial disputes have previously disrupted academic programmes in Nigeria.
