SOKOTO ATTACK: SOLDIERS KILL SEVERAL BANDITS, LAUNCH AIR OPERATION

Security forces in Sokoto State have foiled an attempted attack on Sifawa town in Bodinga Local Government Area, with several suspected bandits reportedly killed during the confrontation.

The attackers reportedly stormed the community around 10am on Wednesday, advancing from Horo village in neighbouring Shagari Local Government Area.

They allegedly attempted to overrun the military barracks in Sifawa, leading to a gun battle with soldiers and police officers stationed in the area.

A resident said security personnel eventually pushed the attackers back, while several suspected bandits were believed to have been killed as others fled into nearby millet farms.

Two soldiers reportedly sustained injuries during the encounter and were evacuated to a hospital for treatment.

Following the attack, military authorities commenced an air operation in surrounding areas where the fleeing bandits were believed to have taken refuge.

A security source said the air operation was aimed at locating the fleeing attackers, while a ground operation would subsequently be conducted to clear the area and prevent the group from regrouping.

The incident also disrupted movement along the Sifawa-Birnin Kebbi road, leaving motorists stranded for several hours while the security operation was underway.

As of the time of reporting, the exact number of casualties among the attackers and security personnel had not been officially confirmed.

The spokesman of the 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, said the Defence Headquarters would issue an official statement on the incident.

The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed the attack and said security operatives had been deployed to maintain peace and protect residents.

The development has renewed concerns about the security of communities in Sokoto State, particularly rural areas vulnerable to attacks by armed criminal groups.

Security authorities urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing operations.
