SHOCK AT ASABA MONARCH’S 70TH BIRTHDAY AS CHIEF WARRIOR COLLAPSES AND DIES
The 70th birthday celebration of the Asagba of Asaba, His Royal Majesty Obi (Prof.) Epiphany Azinge, SAN, turned tragic on Thursday when the Odogwu (Chief Warrior) of Asaba, Obi Nwanze Oduah, suddenly collapsed and reportedly died during the reception.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened in the presence of guests and dignitaries who had gathered to honour the monarch’s platinum jubilee.
“Oduah suddenly collapsed at the reception ground, and people immediately rushed to help him,” an eyewitness said. “He was taken to a nearby hospital but sadly confirmed dead shortly after arrival.”
The unexpected loss sent shockwaves across Asaba, casting a dark cloud over what had been a joyful and historic celebration.
Governor Oborevwori Praises the Monarch’s Reign
Before the heartbreaking incident, Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, had celebrated the monarch’s life of service and humility. Speaking at the thanksgiving Mass held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Asaba, he described Obi Azinge’s 70 years as “a shining testament to wisdom, integrity, and purpose.”
The Governor noted that reaching the biblical age of “three score and ten” in sound health is a blessing worth gratitude.
Quoting Proverbs 16:31, he said:
“Gray hair is a crown of glory gained through a righteous life.”
He prayed for continued wisdom, strength, and long life for the monarch.
A Moment of Thanksgiving and Reflection
Delivering the homily, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, highlighted the significance of turning 70, drawing from Psalm 90.
He praised the Asagba as a man of deep faith and service, describing him as:
“A true monarch who has served God and humanity with love, integrity, and commitment.”
A Celebration Marked by Joy — and Sudden Grief
The tragic passing of Chief Warrior Oduah overshadowed what was meant to be a day of joy and thanksgiving. As residents of Asaba await more details surrounding his death, many continue to express shock and sadness over the loss of a respected traditional figure.
