SHETTIMA DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY IN FOOD SECURITY PROGRAMMES

Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for stronger accountability in the Federal Government’s food security interventions, stressing that public resources must produce measurable benefits for farmers and Nigerian households.

Shettima made the call while chairing the seventh meeting of the Steering Committee of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit at the State House in Abuja. The meeting brought together governors, federal ministers, private sector representatives and development partners to review the country’s food systems and coordinate efforts to improve food availability.

The Vice President said greater coordination among federal and state governments, private sector players and other stakeholders was necessary to ensure that food security policies translate into practical results.

With the main harvest season approaching, the committee also considered measures to support farmers and boost domestic food production, improve the movement of food from farming communities to consumers and strengthen strategic food reserves.

Shettima stressed that government interventions must be properly monitored to ensure that funds and other resources committed to food security achieve their intended purpose.

He said the focus should remain on delivering tangible improvements across the food supply chain and making food more available and accessible to Nigerians.
