Renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Dr. Ahmad Abubakar Gumi, has filed a criminal complaint at the Chief Magistrate Court of Kaduna State against two Facebook users over alleged death threats and defamatory posts.

The case, registered as suit number KMD/685/25, was lodged on December 24, 2025, following a series of Facebook posts which, according to Gumi, falsely suggested he issued threats and incited violence, putting his life at risk and tarnishing his reputation.

Court documents state that the defendants, George Udom and Bello Isiaka, allegedly published a post on December 23, 2025, claiming that Sheikh Gumi threatened the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, over ongoing military operations against bandits.

The post reportedly warned that the minister’s family in Zangon Kataf, Southern Kaduna, would be targeted if the military operations were not stopped.

Through his lawyer, Suleiman Danlami Lere, Esq., Sheikh Gumi denied making such statements, describing the posts as false, malicious, and capable of portraying him as a sponsor of terrorism and a threat to national security.

The complainant told the court that the defendants used his name and photograph to lend credibility to the alleged threat, potentially exposing him to retaliation from security agencies and the public.

The criminal summons cited relevant provisions of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017, under which the defendants could face prosecution if found guilty.

Sheikh Gumi emphasized that, as a cleric who promotes peaceful dialogue, the publications were “wicked” and intended to incite hatred and violence against him.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
