Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has criticised former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over what he described as poor governance and irresponsible leadership during El-Rufai’s tenure.

Sani made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, while commenting on El-Rufai’s continued detention and the public debate surrounding his legal troubles.

The former senator said public office should be regarded as temporary and argued that decisions made by political leaders while in power could later attract scrutiny.

Sani also alleged that the El-Rufai administration between 2015 and 2023 used state institutions against political opponents and critics. He cited cases involving arrests and detention of individuals as examples of what he described as the former governor’s disregard for the rule of law.

He further discussed the security situation in Southern Kaduna during El-Rufai’s tenure, questioning the effectiveness of measures taken by the state government to address violence in affected communities.

Sani’s comments come amid ongoing legal proceedings involving El-Rufai, who has remained in detention since February. El-Rufai is facing proceedings relating to allegations of unlawful interception of telephone communications involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. He has pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed October 26 for a ruling on El-Rufai’s no-case submission in the matter.
